I wrote here about my attempt to make August a No Stuff Month. And, as you can see, it is now September. (Time seems to be flying at a faster pace these days.) My No Stuff Month is complete, and a success.
I was able to resist buying things for the whole month. Not one item of makeup, clothing, hair product. I spent a lot of time online window shopping, and thinking about what I was drawn to when I wasn’t considering what I could actually buy. I found that I got price goggles: Sure, that dress is more suited to my new look, but this one is in my price range.
I think this was an experiment that I should repeat often. I started to think more about what I really want out of the clothing I buy. I want to cultivate this new look, which I recognize will be an ongoing process. But I also want to cultivate a different mindset about all the items that go toward making up a look.
I want to retrain myself to resist buying clothing that isn’t perfect because it is close enough and cheap. I want to retrain myself to pay more than Target prices for new shoes that will actually support my feet and last for more than a year. I want to be more mindful of my new look and make it include a full wallet. Spend more on fewer items. Love everything when I buy it.
With these goals in mind, I am really looking forward to some purchases I’ll be making in September. I’ve had a month or more to think about them, and I am ready to put my goals into practice for the first time. I’ve identified what I need and have saved some money last month so that I can spend a bit more on the items I’m looking for to help me transition into fall (whenever the weather catches up.) I’m sure you’ll hear more about those purchases when I’ve made them.
I am also looking forward to completing #81 on my list, try on every single piece of clothing that I own over the course of a weekend, and donate or alter everything that needs work or hasn’t been worn that season. I think that this is the correct mindset to have to objectively look at all my clothes and reassess what I’ve held on to. I can already tell that there will be a larger Goodwill pile in our apartment when that is done.
Wow, I’m so proud of you and am totally going to use you as inspiration. Of course, it won’t be this month for obvious reasons 🙂
